Out of the current situation – exhibition postponed, gallery closed to the public – our first virtual group exhibition ART MATTERS was created, which can only be viewed online at www.galerie-biesenbach.de and our Instagram and Facebook accounts. Strange times, new ways!

With an open call launched on Instagram, we spent two weeks looking for new artists and finally selected 15 participants from nearly 700 applications.

We knew how eclectic this Online Only exhibition could be. But it was precisely the idea of the Open Call that appealed to us: to invite artists from the most diverse directions to apply and submit their work. From this multitude of perspectives and positions, we curated an exhibition that shows a field of tension but also a symbiotic dialogue between the individual artists and artworks. An exhibition that fits the direction and philosophy of the gallery, but also brings something new to our program.

From Sunday, 12 April, one artist will be presented daily at 6 pm with the submitted work. On 26/04, the winner of our competition will be announced: He or she will present his or her work not only virtually but also in our gallery rooms in an exhibition later this year.

We are happy to open our first online only group exhibition tonight and to present Christina Augustesen (*1975, works and lives in Copenhagen), one of 15 finalists we selected after our open call competition ART MATTERS. ARTIST STATEMENT

Light sculptures, "Colour Spaces", Christina Augustesen

My sculptures revolve around the dynamics of light. From observing colours, shades and shifts, I capture and archive what could be described as ‘light testaments’. City landscapes, forest trees, the ocean and any kind of topographic landscape play a role in how light is reflected and affected. Also seasons, geographic location and the flow of light within architectural structures are continuous sources of inspiration.

My inspiration for working with light and colours stems from an understanding of light as a dynamic phenomenon, including understanding how colours occur in light’s refractions. Likewise, I am inspired by the ways that light and colours help accentuate different spaces and create diverse atmospheres. My primary interest is in the interactions occurring in-between the immateriality of light and the materiality of surfaces, including the ways in which these two are co-dependent upon one other, and consequently enable people to perceive surfaces and spaces in meaningful and inspiring ways

Daylight as well as programmed electric light is framed and structured in various box shapes ranging from small cases to large scale outdoor cylindrical installations. By using translucent acrylic sheets as canvases, I illuminate the surfaces from behind in fixed temporal duration. When the light passes through the space and through the transparent and coloured surfaces, it creates depth and new colour creations.

Depending on the amount of light, layers of space and selected colours, different colour combinations are created ranging from delicate shades to more deeply saturated hues. Adding the diffuse light employs different tones and modulations between the shifting colours creating an even larger palette of different colorations. The shifting is harmonized in temporal intervals creating a mellow natural feel as the pace is slow and set to resemble the changeability of the daylight.

We present to you the second of 15 artists we selected after our ART MATTERS open call competition: Bram Braam (*1980 in Sittard, The Netherlands, lives and works in Berlin). ARTIST STATEMENT

Visual artist Bram Braam (NL, 1980) deals with architecture and the constant evolution of our daily surrounding. He draws inspiration from the raw environment of Berlin, utopian beliefs and Dutch landscape. By looking at public space through the eye of a sculpture, the artist has established an intimate connection to the city and it’s architecture. The city of Berlin is known for its many contrasts in rich and poor, slick and raw. It is these contrasts that the artist plays with and brings together in the work, reflecting upon the interest in the manufacturability of a city.

While remaining close to its environment, Braam’s work offers a personal compilation of architectural references to street buildings, constructions and living environments that are essential to our perceptions of city and country. By contextualising the dissolved materials, the work opens new narratives that reference the rapid and unrestrained development of Berlin, and ultimately constitutes a contemporary expression of today’s urban cityscape.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores the relationship between man & the structures he constructs. With influences as diverse as the Bauhaus to the stone architecture of ancient civilisations.
I construct three dimensional sculptures using a combination of traditional & contemporary materials. From casting with plaster of Paris to thermoforming with industrial materials including acrylic sheet & EPS (polystyrene).
My focus over the last three years has been to develop a process that would allow me to work intuitively.
My most recent (2020) wall based sculptures are constructed using a subtractive process. Whereby I cut dozens of regular sized geometric shapes from slabs of EPS. I make no preparatory drawings before I begin each new piece. I will construct using only the shapes in front of me, there is no plan or pattern. These geometric ‘building blocks’ are then balanced against my studio wall using a time based system.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My Work is very small and intimate and is almost always square (I have had an ongoing passion for the square form for over 10 years, and it will not go away!!). It combines the reductive formalism of a minimalist aesthetic (influenced by the Work of Donald Judd's trademark 'Stacks' of the 1960's), with autobiographical subject matter.
Although material is very important to my Work, unlike the original practitioners of Minimalism, it is not the sole intent of the Work. Material, color and surface are used as signifiers to communicate a personal narrative. Wood is the main material I use for most of my Work. It is my 'canvas'. I then add other materials, such as aluminum, enamel, rubber and various hardware.
In this Work, "END [of a Very Long Story...]", the shiny red enamel surface signifies 'Life' and the matte black rubber surface signifies 'Death' (or "END" of the relationship). This Work is meant to suggest the appearance of a book. The autobiographical content is that of a very long personal relationship, which finally came to a close; much like the ending of a story in a book.

ARTIST STATEMENT

10 years ago I started with my ongoing series "Wrappings", in which I paint human bodies in a whole or partially concealed state. The partly surreal figurations seem weird or mysterious, but despite their ambiguity they convey a vague feeling of fear, isolation or withdrawal from the world. My latest work: "The Answer" continues this series. The focus on the human eye, which, from the veiled figure, reveals anxiety, but perhaps also a glimmer of hope, is a symbol of our present situation.

The place of memory.

Through this new family of sculptures called "Trinitarian Structure", I try to determine an empty interior space, barely visible, because it is hidden by the structure of the foreground: the spectator, in silence, through an attentive interior listening, can recompose it and situate himself spiritually in it, in an imaginary journey to the empty interior of the sculpture.

ARTIST STATEMENT
INTERVIEW

Architectural ensembles in South Africa fifteen years after the end of apartheid. Daniel Müller Jansen contrasts the gated communities of the wealthy, predominantly white population with the social housing projects of the black population. The differences between these two environments have been neutralized by a uniform procedure of exposure and post-production.

Read the following interview between gallery owner Esther Niebel and Daniel Müller Jansen about South Africa and his two series “there is me & there is you” and “Overexposed” (Horand Knaup, Der Spiegel, 29 December, 2008):

Esther Niebel:
What were your impressions when you took the first shots for your series there is me & there is you in 2008? What was your starting point, how did you approach these impressions photographically?

Daniel Müller Jansen:
It all began on my way from the airport into Cape Town. Coming into the city, I was confronted with a divided world. On one side of the motorway, there were gated communities like colourful pearls on a string. On the other side, a mix of townships and social housing. I found this huge contrast very disturbing. To me, this motorway into the city perfectly illustrated the gap between rich and poor.
My first South Africa series there is me & there is you showed exactly this dichotomy of ghettoization – the gated communities of the well-off, mostly white, part of the population and, in contrast, the social housing projects of the mostly black population. My goal was to create a series of architectural pictures which would really capture the phenomenon sociologically, politically and also aesthetically. My most important realisation while working on this project was that architecture is the packaging, the wrapper if you will, of a society and its attitudes. I tried to portray the housing estates as such in my photos. The series is therefore a portrait of a society. It doesn’t concentrate on individual stories but rather on location and architecture, devised and built by humans for humans.

Esther Niebel:
You have continued your series until this day. In your opinion, has anything changed concerning this phenomenon of gated communities?

Daniel Müller Jansen:
For the wealthy, gated communities symbolise the achievable dream of an orderly and safe living environment. But, at the same time, they’re something like parallel worlds which demonstrate a new form of segregation. The gated communities of South Africa have long since become a mass phenomenon – which is why I focussed on them again in my second series Overexposed.
Overexposed portrays the gated communities as apparent versions of inner paradise and spaces of escapism which, viewed from the outside, resemble a modern version of a stronghold. On the outside, a part of society is protected through walls which rise as high as 3 m, electric fences, cameras, barriers and guarded entrances, while it subjects itself to various rules and codes on the inside. The series Overexposed plays with this Inside and Outside and shows spaces of community and simultaneous segregation.
But the interesting thing is this: The more a part of society tries to protect itself with walls and fences, the more evident the needs and fears of these people become – the title Overexposed and the exaggerated aesthetic of my work allude to this fact and highlight the pictured architecture as well as the attitude of its inhabitants in more than one way.

Esther Niebel:
Long exposure as your artistic medium plays an important part in both of your South Africa series there is you & there is me and Overexposed – the title even alludes to it. It gives your pictures something of a picturesque and surreal quality. What are you alluding to?

Daniel Müller Jansen:
My inspiration for my South African work was Mannerism. Since my days in university, I’ve been fascinated by the luminance and chromaticity of mannerist paintings. In my South African series, I’ve used purposeful overexposure of analogue film to achieve a similar luminance and chromaticity. This let me emphasise the artificial and exemplary qualities of the architecture as well as the attitude and manners of its inhabitants. My photographs also have a mannerist aspect and portray a society in which manners don’t just illustrate decorum and conventions but also boundaries.

Esther Niebel:
Do you see your work as purely artistic or does it also have a political dimension?

Daniel Müller Jansen:
My work has a picturesque quality and visual power combined with a socially critical aspect. This dichotomy makes my photographs attractive and repellent at the same time. Initially, the beholder will be attracted by the special aesthetic and pastel colours. At second glance, however, the photographs raise questions about the architecture shown. Architectural reality is exactly like that in South Africa. Something can be perceived as beautiful at first glance and suggest an improved quality of life. But at what price? Where is South African society going? What kind of world do we want to live in?

Esther Niebel:
Do you think that your series about gated communities in South Africa which you started eight years ago are something of a harbinger of a growing worldwide phenomenon? Why?

Daniel Müller Jansen:
You can find gated communities all over the world but mostly in countries and cities where the gap between the rich and the poor is very pronounced. From Mexico City to Rio de Janeiro and from Moscow to Dubai. The further globalisation progresses the stronger our need for smaller structures and communities will become – gated communities are a kind of microcosm which fills exactly this need.
But, and this is where it turns into a bit of a touchy subject when we’re talking about South Africa, gated communities can be seen as a new form of segregation. During times of Apartheid, Black and White were separated, today it’s Poor and Rich. People who have to rely on help and subsidies are mostly black people in townships and housing projects, wealth is mostly distributed among the white population. This state is a time bomb! There is a desire for a common future in South African society, but the need for an improvement of the status quo and as well as independence and equal opportunities for everyone represent a great social and political challenge.

Esther Niebel:
Will you continue working on the series? Do they have a processual component and if so, can you describe it?

Daniel Müller Jansen:
In my mind, the series Overexposed is not completed yet. I’m also planning another series about new forms of housing in South Africa. In that sense, yes, there is a processual component in as far as that this topic has been playing on my mind a lot since 2008. By the way, 2008 was the same year that Matthew Herbert’s very political album there’s Me and there’s You came out. Its mood and concept had a great impact on me. Which is why I called my first South African series there is me & there is you – a variation on the album title – to show a distance and separation in a direct and inelegant way. As long as this separation exists in South African society, there will be inspiration and work for me. It will probably be a long process because some things haven’t improved since then and are still ongoing issues in South Africa in 2015 – let me quote:
"Hardly anywhere else in the world is the gap between rich and poor larger than in South Africa. More than 18,000 homicides a year give it one of the highest murder rates in the world. The South African Security Minister even referred to his country as a ‘killing field’. The unofficial unemployment rate is over 30 percent and the average life expectancy is 49 years, which is significantly lower than the average for the entire African continent. The spread of HIV in South Africa is a lot higher than the African average."

ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice can be characterised as a form of contemporary bricolage, which utilises industrially produced Modernist furniture, 1960’s Scandinavian Glass Vases, everyday domestic utensils, and cast concrete: materials that act as strong visual Modernist markers. I want my mediums to look like they come from outside the studio, from the everyday world, rather than materials one would only find in an artist’s studio. I am interested in the formal qualities and legacy of sculpture. Elements such as cabinets, tables, sideboards and trays are liberated from their traditional role, cut up and reconfigured into structures that no longer have a utilitarian purpose. Through their displacement and reconfiguration any functional reading of the elements is disrupted. I make the functional non-functional. In dislocating and rupturing these everyday objects it heightens the tension between the functional aspect of the objects used and their immaterial value. Pushing my work towards abstraction this asserts the notion that abstraction is only ever possible in relation to function. The works are constructed with immediacy and little or no planning, I never draw or sketch beforehand. This infuses the work with an energy and tension that draws upon contemporary concepts of collapse, ruin, reforming and recycling. In line with Constructivist thinking and trajectories I am investigating the connection of the relief, sculpture and architecture. I constantly try to change the materials I use to avoid the temptation of repeating myself.

ARTIST STATEMENT

By applying physical layers in my work, in which I control varying extents of opacity and translucency through careful selection of materials, a ‘veil’ that masks and reveals areas of each painting is created.
I stretch and paint fine measures of taffeta over a wooden frame 'corpus', creating an expanded dimension in my work that manifests itself in between painting and sculpture.
I employ advanced technical skills to create reductive formal compositions by applying thin washes of acrylic paint onto the delicate stretched surfaces, carefully developing colour combinations to further suggest depth and compositional space.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Any artistic activity constitutes a struggle against time. A gesture against finitude and towards Eternity.“
Being aware that the Artwork does not only exist during, but also before and after its exhibition time, implies a reflection on protection, immunity, transport and preservation. In addition to the museum and its duty to preserve, freeing the Artwork of time and its imprint is obvious. This ambition of the Immortal Artwork results from a logic of optimization and total control over the piece produced and its environment.
This quest for the infinite sculptural, expressed through formal experiences, at the frontiers of our physical conceptions, explores the reality and the supposed truths of our world, where our perception would trouble our logic.
The obsession with perfection as well as the relationship between the use of solid and stable materials with geometrical bodies using packaging codes constitute a radical opposition to entropy.

ARTIST STATEMENT

PUTPUT was formed in 2011 by Stephan Friedli (CH) and Ulrik Martin Larsen (DK) with a focus on exploring the meaning, materiality and relationships we as humans have with everyday objects. Undertaking a meticulous interrogation and research of our immediate surroundings through ideas and concepts to purposely build connections between meaning, expression and artefact; reinventing and reconfiguring the context and expression of objects is at the core of PUTPUT’s artistic practise.
“Jesus on Holiday” is a tongue in cheek representation of a Christian Cross fabricated as an inflatable pool toy; throwing caution to the wind, PUTPUT enters a dialogue about symbolism, faith and tradition.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I have always been attracted to structures and the so-called soft materials (paper, textile, and certain types of wood). I constantly need structures or frameworks as a starting point in order to start creating something. Although I value nothing higher than freedom, I need a more or less strict system or framework in which I can develop my ideas freely. This basic attitude made me turn to some traditional techniques, computer programs and languages. Boundaries and rules can also be very inspiring once you are well accustomed to them, and it is also a great pleasure to design my own structures and laws. In recent years, among other things, I have been working on my folded objects that are usually folded from a single piece of canvas. The fabric and the oil paint are of course a reference, a kind of homage to classical painting, but my works should definitely not be called paintings. I work with basic geometric shapes that are almost trivial, yet at the same time essential, universal, and solemn, and convey something that has little to do with everyday life. In recent times, in contrast to my previous photographic work, three-dimensionality has been coming to the fore in my work. My main ambition is to create pure works of art that invite the viewer to decipher them.

Today already marks day 13 of our virtual group show ART MATTERS and we are pleased to present to you the thirteenth of 15 artists we selected after our recent open call: Michael Craik (*1972 in Edinburgh, lives and works in Fife, Scotland). ARTIST STATEMENT

Michael Craik was born in Edinburgh in 1972 and has worked as an artist in Scotland for over 20 years. He studied Fine Art at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen before completing an MA in European Fine Art in Barcelona. A recipient of several awards, Craik’s work has been widely exhibited internationally and is represented by galleries in Scotland, Germany, and the US.
Craik produces quiet, pared-down paintings concerned with colour, material quality and process. Working in the mediums of acrylic and watercolour, Craik creates each painting by repeatedly applying paint and removing it again. His monochromatic watercolours on paper are produced by overlaying several washes of paint, to create densely pigmented blocks of colour. Areas of paint are then washed away, creating translucent veils of colour that flow across the surface. This process of reduction features throughout his work, alluding to forces of erosion that form our landscape. He allows the elemental qualities of the paint to determine the appearance of each work, creating contemplative, minimal paintings. The focus of his acrylic paintings often lies at the edges, where sanding reveals strata of paint, exposing layers of alternating colour that have been built up by brushing, pouring or spreading. In this sense, his work shares a relationship with geology, to the laying down and erosion of rock. Living in Scotland, one is constantly reminded of the forces that sculpt the land. Craik’s studio in Kinghorn, Fife, stands on a cliff overlooking the River Forth estuary. Surrounded by this expanse of water and the endless ebb and flow of the tide, Craik is aware that these processes have, over time, permeated his artistic practice.

ARTIST STATEMENT

gestern – morgen – nächste Woche.

The title of the work could also stand as a symbol for my paintings and my way of working. If the medium of painting can be described as traditional in a favourable sense, it is still an old technique. Critics would say: from yesterday. Images and also painted images change. Through the use of other, new techniques, the use of digital media.
Digitally erased white areas, inverted surfaces, collaged picture elements, mark the way in the search for the image of tomorrow.
And next week? Sprayed over, torn down, disappeared. Is the image idea, the fashion already further or was the doubt bigger?
There remains a gap. White void. For another new beginning.
Or was everything meant quite differently?

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am currently painting two-dimensional surfaces and three-dimensional objects in parallel, because I want to detach the experience of three- dimensionality from the ‘modelled form’ and link it instead to the surface of the painting. The three-dimensional works are interventions of sorts, they thrust into the space but conversely they also project space.

Paradoxically, I have noticed that I work with them in opposite directions spatially. I construct two-dimensional works by painting a volume or by piercing the surface. When I paint three-dimensional pieces, I do it optically against a wall. I also personally associate this method with reliefs and the experience of depth in them.

The surfaces in my work do indeed break up and search for direction. For me, the sharp angles are above all points where the surface of the painting makes a turn, disrupting its frontality, which immediately makes the work more interesting. Viewers find themselves in a danger zone or embroiled in something that exists independently of them.

The eventfulness in my works is generally not logical; I am interested in seemingly impossible spatiality. I construct spatial paradoxes into my works, surfaces of collision or friction that seem to lead to a destination. The situation is a bit similar to groping one’s way blindly in a new environment.

There is no point of painterly knowledge or control. The spatial experience of my work cannot be fixed to any single cognitive or experiential point. Instead, the works are loaded with elements that lead to fracture, such as acute angles where the surface of the painting takes a surprising turn. I also deliberately use a forceful stroke technique to give the planes a spatial direction and an accelerating motion. Often, however, this conflicts with the three-dimensionality. I am intrigued by such disturbances or intervention.

I need geometry for some reason. But my geometry is of a kind of cut-and-fold type. Dividing a plane into ever-smaller parts will always involve geometry or mathematics. But I have no interest in systematising the principles of spatial division. I am interested in intuitive progress instead. At the same time, I am very careful to keep the level of experience moving. Instead of constructing interesting forms, I decompose structures of space-time into images, offering viewer-subjects an opportunity to situate themselves more individually within.

We invite you to submit 1 image of 1 of your artworks as an introduction to your vision and practice to be considered for our upcoming online only group exhibition: “Art Matters” will be exclusively presented on our Instagram feed and website from 12-26 April 2020.

For this online only exhibition, we will select 15 artists out of which 1 will be chosen to present her/his work in one of our upcoming shows in our gallery space in Cologne in late 2020.

Please submit 1 image of 1 of your artworks (you must own copyrights), your CV and a short statement to info@galerie-biesenbach.com
