Sergio Femar (*1990, Spain) and Árpád Forgó (*1972, Hungary) both work in a combination of painting and sculpture – but their art could hardly be more different. In our new duo exhibition, we juxtapose their wall sculptures and volume, texture and structure merge into a harmonious interplay of visual stimulation.

Both artists bring forms and dimensions to life with a creative joy of experimentation: Works with visual and tactile impact that convey physicality and spatial depth through their three-dimensional aspects. It's all about the haptics, the desire to touch the artwork and feel its physicality and materiality.

Whether Femar's boldly painted blocks and assemblages made from found wood scraps or Forgó's perfectly shaped canvases over which the artist lets the paint run, the sculptural aspect of their art opens up possibilities to create shapes, colours and dimensions in a completely new way.

Plasticity here refers to the ability to depict structures, textures and volumes in a work in three dimensions: the ability of a work of art to convey a certain physicality both visually and haptically. The surface plays an important role in both their works. The visual and haptic effect of the artworks is intensified by the different materials, surface structures and treatments. Whether rough and coarse in Sergio Femar's work or fine and smooth in Árpád Forgó's, they awaken the desire to explore the surface with our fingertips and discover the history of the material.

The works of Sergio Femar (*1990, lives and works in Galicia, Spain) keep a reminiscence of the refined use of material of Arte Povera, but he indicates a new way to approach it through the various cuts made with wood. Slices of this material are coloured and assembled to create unique and serene reflections. “My work stands between the calm of the studio and the frenetic pace of contemporary culture and its ephemeral nature. It leads the vandal act to a mature reflection, in other words, brings back the joys of creation without feeling restricted by academic pressure, by using risk as the connecting element between vertigo and serenity.”

Árpád Forgó (*1972): The Budapest-based artist is clearly rooted in the tradition of concrete art, but expands it with a playful approach and a love of experimentation. Forgó finds images that offer us wonderfully sensual stimuli. He invites the viewer to look closely and see if they can trust their eyes. The subtle colour gradient on a canvas, for example, is created by the curvature of a slightly stretched canvas in three dimensions. Here, the artist explores the boundary between the "shaped canvas" and the painterly body, which resembles an object. However, his works always remain images and do not question them.
