To curate our new virtual group exhibition ART MATTERS 2, we have been looking for international visual artists via open call from 8-22 November. According to our specifications, 1 artwork with a net sales price of up to 2.000,- € could be submitted per artist. From all applications received, we finally selected 15.

On a daily basis at 6pm CET sharp from Sunday, 29/11 onwards, all 15 finalists will be presented one by one with their submitted work exclusively on galerie-biesenbach.de and our Instagram/Facebook accounts. The presentation of our Top 15 is rounded off by "Honourable Mentions" in our daily Instagram stories, in which we acknowledge the works of a selected number of artists who just missed the final cut.

On Monday, 14 December at 6pm the winner of our competition will be announced: He or she will be invited to participate in an exhibition in 2021 in our gallery rooms in Cologne.

About our ART MATTERS series:
Just like with our first open artist call project last April, we were aware how versatile and eclectic this second online exhibition could be. But it was precisely the idea of an open call that appealed to us: to invite artists from the most diverse directions to apply and submit their work. From this multitude of perspectives and positions, we curated an exhibition that shows a field of tension but also a symbiotic dialogue between the individual artworks. An exhibition that matches the direction and philosophy of the gallery, but also brings something new to our programme.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Patrizia Kränzlein's drawings, a combination of graphite and linoleum paint on paper, are mostly reduced to black, white and grey tones. During production, the paint is applied directly to the paper with a roller, thus the roller functions as a drawing instrument.

The works are developed from variable geometric basic forms and integrated segmentally into the picture surface. They show pictorial spaces that are configured by lines, surfaces, shades and depth spaces. In doing so, the artist always seeks the way into the depths, with a demand for the valid, towards the essential.

The last artist/artwork presentation before we announce the winner of our online competition tomorrow, Monday 14 December at 6pm CET! But first our attention goes to Yoella Razili (*1950 in Israel, lives and works in Los Angeles) who today completes our Top 15 which we presented over the course of the last two weeks. Read more about the artist whose work belongs to the non-objective art movement and spans a range of media including found materials and paint in her artist statement and CV below.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is a sum of the visual experience around me. I am influenced by architecture, art, and design.

On my daily walk, I find materials that inspire me to redesign and remake new objects. I pick up an old chair, a wooden frame, construction leftovers, cardboard, flooring base boards – all which have had previous history. In my studio, I recreate new structures that change the found objects completely with new forms and colour. Yet, the character and the story of these found objects are left to be seen.

My underlying guidance is taken from the recognition and appreciation of the abstract movements, especially minimalism and Arte Povera.

In my work, I try to reach a balance of forces. I aim to get a resolution of tension between contradicting surfaces, weights, scale, and colour.

My space is an expansion of man-made architectural structures. It is a landscape that is around me and in me. It is tangible, perhaps recognizable and affirming, but yet new, pure, and magical.

Saturday, 12 December: Penultimate post in our virtual group exhibition ART MATTERS 2 before we announce the winner of our online competition on Monday evening. Already in April – followiing our first Open Call – Alex De Bruycker (*1968 in Ghent, Belgium, lives and works in Maarkedal, Belgium) was represented in the ART MATTERS Top 15 with his submitted work. And today we are again pleased to present him as number 14 – in no evaluative order – out of 15 finalists. Read more about De Bruycker and his abstract painting, for which he uses materials of varying opacity and translucency, in his artist statement and CV below.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Out of an urge to give an extra dimension to his photographs, Alex De Bruycker started end of 2017 first experiments with overpainting them, not through the use of digital techniques but with acrylic paint. By applying physical layers in his work, in which he controls varying extents of opacity and translucency through his careful selection of materials, the artist creates a ‘veil’ that masks and reveals areas of each painting. De Bruycker stretches and paints fine measures of taffeta over a partly visible wooden frame 'corpus', creating an expanded dimension in his work that manifests itself in between painting and sculpture.

In his early works, such as 'Dominant Gelb', De Bruycker’s love for minimalist architecture and composition is clearly evident, inspired by Claudio Silvestrin and Richard Serra. He employs advanced technical skill to create reductive formal compositions by applying thin washes of acrylic paint onto the delicate stretched surfaces of his works, carefully developing colour combinations to further suggest depth and compositional space. Recent experiments with other media such as charcoal, spray-paint and sumi-ink suggest the potential to incite multiple viewing sensations in De Bruycker’s ongoing explorations of the sensual and illusionary possibilities of painting.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My current work applies the ingenuity of contemporary construction and engineering techniques to produce delicate works that have an atmosphere of stillness and material honesty. Cast concrete serves as a matrix for compositions that include canvas, resins, graphite, and 3D-printed polymers. My process begins in the realm of 2-dimensional graphical work, and is transformed through digital fabrication into subtle reliefs and silhouettes that are echoed via the casting process onto the concrete surface. The alchemy of the curing concrete also plays an important role – in contrast to the predictability and precision of the formwork, it is an organic transformation which opens the work to chance and the unexpected. My visual language draws from the geometric forms found in industrial environments, machinery, and architecture.

“For me every work is a technical challenge, and a combination of the high and low-tech. Tuning materials to your aesthetic vision, is for me the craft of the artist.”

Andrew Clausen (U.S.A., 1977) began his artistic training in the cooperative studios of Art City in Southern California. From there he travelled to Italy where for 13 years he worked alongside master artisans and developed his craft into a tuned combination of conceptual ideas and refined use of materials. Cast concrete, metals, and composite polymers are his primary mediums which are used to form works that span between minimalist thought-provoking objects to engaging fabrications. He currently lives and works in the city of Arnhem, Netherlands.

Building a painting by repetition, working in series, layering and the application of ordering principles, thinking in terms of texture and structure and working with stacking effects underline that distance only really disappears when something is made tangible. What you see are layers of time, space, fluidity and colour. Because all art expressions that make ideas tangible, eliminate the distance between the viewer and the work of art. That experience of unification through which we can be touched or touched literally.
The art of Evelyn Snoek has reached an apotheosis after years of experience and hard labour. The search for the essence of painting took her many years of working in many styles from works in large scale and in series with associations from landscape and chemical processes – because of a fascination for alchemy and the physical characteristics of paint, she worked in oil paint and as an graphic artist and made etchings – until the destruction and cutting up of the canvases to search for a new definition of Space and Time. The intense way of painting and the search for meaning and content changed over time to the quest of painting itself. The medium is the message.
The pouring of paint has always been a consistency and because of the paint which became lost on the floor she started to use plastic containers in which she collected the fluid, by now, acrylic paint. Recycling of materials also became a subject. And because of the shapes and forms from the plastic containers which were sculptural by themselves, she started to use them as a mould. As a replica for making a sculptural paint work. The works became also more minimalistic and concentrated in form and shape.
But the main focus in her work has always been the paint itself as a carrier of meaning and content. Paint, with or without all kinds of additives, can evoke all kind of sensations and aesthetic appearances. In this sense also, Black is as a colour extra significant. Colour as real part of a physical universe. Black is fascinating, it is infinite and revolutionary.

Already in April Ute Krafft (*1963 in Sibiu, Romania, lives and works in Cologne, Germany) was featured in our first virtual exhibition ART MATTERS. And also tonight we are pleased to present her work submitted for our open call as part of our Top 15. Read more about the artist, the 10th of our 15 ART MATTERS 2 finalists, and her figurative painting full of mystery and drama in the following statement and CV.

STATEMENT

Mysterious scenes, hidden bodies, fragmentary insights: Ute Krafft's figurative pictorial worlds elude clear attribution. They lay tracks and leave behind a vague feeling of unease.

The works open up contemporary worlds whose protagonists therefore seem familiar to us. The scenes seem to be taken from life: they suggest to the viewer that he or she is a secret eyewitness of a fleeting moment. Ute Krafft's paintings reveal the drama lurking beneath the surface. The events are placed in a sharp theatrical light and show frustration, obsession, pain, guilt, fear or incapacity.

For the Transylvanian-born artist, human interactions are – figuratively speaking – a complex ballet of emotions. Her attention is focused on exploring our peculiarities, our relationships with one another: her paintings reflect psychological dramas. The observer is drawn into the often enigmatic events and is thereby struck by a queasy feeling.

At the heart of Ute Krafft's painting are the people: Whether seemingly lost, immersed in their own world of thought, they always try to gain our attention through their silence.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice is rather introverted, focused on the concrete, physical reality of the medium in use, i.e. painting. Although constructing and playfulness are essential parts of my creative work, the subject of my recent works can best be best understood within the question: “What happens when we look at a painting?” and thus explore the vitality of the relationship between a painting and its beholder, where possibilities of manipulation are of great importance.

I build the painting from the most basic visual elements: (flat) surface/shape, colour, and a line. I try to assemble these in such a way that the works, by cross-questioning the concept of perspective and the possibilities of a shaped canvas, play with the illusion of depth, hoping to “confuse the spectator".

All this whilst maintaining or even emphasizing the objectivity of the individual painting. The image does not exist merely within its frame but is part of the physical space of which an essential component is also the viewer. In other words, I strive for the viewer perceiving him/herself over contemplation to establish an “intimate” connection with the observed object. The linear drawing often continues on the sides of the canvas, being an additional trigger calling the spectator to be active while observing the “scene”; as the image changes with our focus and/or standpoint.

The term constructing and the DIY mind-set that comes with it has been a part of my everyday life since I can remember. This is hardly a surprise, given the fact that I actually grew up in a carpentry workshop. Under the supervision of my father, I collected wood waste to polish and compose them into unique toys.

Assuming that a painting that no one is looking at is just a potential painting and that every dialogue requires two people, I could as well say that my paintings are actually metaphors for myself. I am the one longing to connect; with myself and society. That’s why it’s important to me to make my works, albeit with quite a few non-painterly tools, with my own hands.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Formal concerns, shape, balance, proximity and colour, constitute the focus of this body of work. Reducing the palette to just a few colours and values with simplified shapes has allowed for slow discoveries during the process with the hope that the perception is one of a similar contemplative experience. Previous episodes persist in the work that summon the nature of memory, of what is real and what is imagined.
The perception of space is not dictated for the viewer. Plays of line, shape and simple adjustments of colour and value create opportunities for interpretation. It is the field or picture plane that is engaged in a play of enigmatic reality. There are no pictorial concerns in any kind of purposeful representation. There is no greater meaning, nothing is hidden and the work is completely self-referential.
Ambiguity is the place where engagement begins. For the viewer that engagement has to do with discovery of something unfamiliar. It’s a new flavour; there are no words to describe it. But through this experience of confronting something different and unacquainted there is potential for encountering the evocative.

STATEMENT

In the recent works of Paul Corvers, the figurative tools are increasingly being abandoned in order to arrive at pure, abstract compositions, built up of clear areas of colour determined by chance and indeterminacy. At the time Piet Mondrian composed his compositions intuitively but harmoniously. We also recognize this in the work of Corvers.
Whereas the Neue Wilden presented themselves to us as highly expressive painters averse to dogmas and working in total freedom, Corvers reaches this stage with completely different work.
The adventure of painting is in the minimum. In this way, the areas of colour that appear on the canvas only refer to themselves. They are completely at rest and entirely at peace with each other. It results in works that represent a welcome silence. The small formats of most of the works unravel an unprecedented grandeur. It is in line with what John Cage once said: 'There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, if we're trying to produce silence, we cannot.’ In the art of Paul Corvers working in great freedom also results in a void rich in images and sounds. A composed silence.

Day 6 of our current online group exhibition ART MATTERS 2 and time for the 6th of 15 contributions: We are pleased to present this evening Sali Muller (*1981 in Luxembourg, lives and works in Kehlen, Luxembourg). STATEMENT

Sali Muller negotiates the meaning of time-sections new and oscillates between premature, unexplained sequences and infinity. In this way she extends the well-known allegorical images of European art history and translates them into a present of fractures.
She combines conceptual sculptural positions with a series of complex themes that are important for her entire creational process.
She uses artistic means to explore currently relevant issues, in particular those of identity, gender roles and (self-)representation in the context of social change and in times of self-optimisation.
Similar to the individual attempts to distinguish ourselves in a social fabric, Sali Muller marks the exhibition spaces with light-ref­lecting installations, dazzling objects and projections.
Her visual “comments” become a reflection of a time where delusions increasingly play a significant role.

Already in April, Viktoria Körösi (*1977 in Budapest, Hungary, lives and works in Linz, Austria) was represented in our first virtual exhibition ART MATTERS. And also this evening we are pleased to present her work submitted for our recent open call as part of our Top 15. ARTIST STATEMENT

I have always been attracted to structures and the so-called soft materials paper, textile, and certain types of wood. I constantly need frameworks as a starting point in order to begin creating something. Although I value nothing higher than freedom, I need a more or less strict system in which I can develop my ideas. This basic attitude made me turn to some traditional techniques. Boundaries and rules can also be very inspiring once you are well accustomed to them, and it is also a great pleasure to design my own principles. Since 2013, among others, I have been working on my folded objects that are usually folded from a single piece of canvas. The fabric and the oil paint are of course a reference, a kind of homage to classical painting, but my works should definitely not be called paintings. I work with basic geometric shapes that are almost trivial, yet at the same time essential. In recent times, in contrast to my previous photographic work, three-dimensionality has been coming to the fore in my work. My main ambition is to create pure works of art that invite the viewer to decipher them.

Recently I have been working on so called floor pieces and shaped canvas ring objects to reach some new directions in my art practice and develop my artworks into sculptural, space reflecting items. These works were partly inspired by an imaginary traditional Japanese tea room, where it is not allowed to install artworks in a traditional western way, like hanging pictures on de wall, except scroll paintings. My current pieces could be placed on the floor or eventually on a pedestal. These works investigate the contrast between soft and hard, flat and sculptural. My aspiration is to transform soft, plane fabrics to three dimensional objects choosing high quality traditional materials, like silk and moiré. The range of colours of my works is strictly monochrome, mainly white, grey or silver.

Tonight we are pleased to present Tonneke Sengers (*1959 in Breda, Netherlands, lives and works in Haarlem, Netherlands) and her submitted work. Read more about the fourth of our 15 ART MATTERS 2 Open Call finalists and her minimalist geometric wall works with a strong reference to architecture in the following text and CV.

STATEMENT

In dialogue with the surrounding space

The work of Tonneke Sengers (1959, Breda) is strongly related to architecture. From the beginning. Sengers studied monumental design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam where the connection between art and architecture was central. Her murals and wall sculptures enter into a dialogue with the space around them. Sengers works with minimal means: lines and geometric shapes that create optimal three-dimensional effects. This abstract geometric language can be applied on any scale without losing its power.

The design of the wall sculptures "Up the Wall" is first drawn on the computer and then cut from aluminium with a laser cutter. The openwork aluminium gives an important role to the wall behind it and the space around it. The shadow is part of the work and is a soft counterpart to the hard shapes. Composition and colour are precisely defined to bring out the intended dialogue between illusion and reality.

The counter-form becomes an interval in which the effects of Senger's interventions resonate. They indirectly form a new and often surprising reality. It seems like Sengers' work comes to you in two ways. You have the idea of being able to decipher something and at the same time you can effortlessly disappear into the space that the work shows you.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Laura Jane Scott is an artist working in minimalist, geometric abstraction. Her desire for formal simplicity through geometric form and her striking use of colour enables her to produce work where painting explores a model of architectural form and where the colour literally embodies a physical structure. The resulting work is a hybrid of painting and sculpture; a refined visual vocabulary of form and colour.

The elegant minimalism of her work belies the systematic rigour behind it. Working in series, she explores the idea of ‘possibilities within boundaries’. By taking one geometric shape as the starting point and drawing on principles from minimalist architecture, hard edge abstraction and conceptual art, she takes a basic form and draws out all the possible arrangements that can be made by laying one shape on top of another. Once every iteration has been explored, final compositions are chosen instinctively, based on their feeling of balance and form.

“My aim is always to express an idea as simply and as elegantly as possible. To strip everything back to only what is necessary to communicate that idea. My work is primarily an exploration of balance, of positive and negative space, of presence and absence.”

Laura studied at Camberwell College of Arts and Ravensbourne University London. Her work has been shown in the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, in a solo show at The Foundry Gallery, London, as well as many group shows, and is owned by private collectors internationally. She currently has a solo presentation on display at the Head Office of Aviva in London. The works commissioned have now been acquired by Aviva and will be added to their permanent collection after the show.

ARTIST STATEMENT

For nearly two decades, my work depicted structures built on and into the ground, leaving the imprint of something hard in the malleable earth. These man-made forms were emblematic of our relation to the non-human environment: physical manifestations of the worldview that produces them.
A recent personal crisis prompted me to search for a more abstract way to visualize the confrontation between human geometry and nature. This process led me to construct non-objective shapes whose surfaces are often the only referent of the buildings that were once a prominent feature in my landscapes.
I compare my current practice to that of an architect who commissions himself to build forms of his own devising. Unlike the actual architect’s, however, my planning and drafting isn’t preliminary but the resolved actuality itself, embedded in the virtual space that is the painting, which simultaneously is an object in space. This dynamic between idea and reality in representational painting has always fascinated me, but it has now assumed a dominance that turned it into the sole content of my art.

We are pleased to open our new online group exhibition ART MATTERS 2 this evening and to introduce Birte Horn (*1972 in Düsseldorf, lives and works in Blaubeuren, Germany), one of 15 finalists we selected after our Open Call which ended one week ago. ARTIST STATEMENT

Birte Horn is a painter.

What if the ever faster changing situations no longer allow a totalitarian perception of reality? The attention of my work is based on the principle of deconstruction and construction. The dissolution of structures and the transfer into the respective composed partial whole is a process in my work, which means the decomposition and fusion of general realities.

A complex combinatorics of very different views of space such as layers of space characterises my work as a whole in recent years. All those layering – both the layering of different layers of colour and the layering of material fragments themselves – I perform in a variety of ways: I cut out pieces from existing paintings on paper, cardboard and above all on canvas, in order to transfer them with other painting pieces into a new pictorial structure from which unusual spatial worlds emerge. They move on the interfaces between reality and possibility. Across different time levels, the past of the once found formulation merges inextricably with the future of the work in progress. The resulting layering results in an almost haptically perceptible pictorial relief, suggesting space and at the same time satirising it again only in its relative two-dimensionality.

"At the crossroads and intersections of the visible and the invisible, Birte Horn clearly shows the edge on the one hand, but on the other hand she does not prevent the viewer from having to change views and times just as constantly, to step forward and backward at the same time, to exchange up and down at the same time, in order to be able to constantly readjust the torque of reality.
She is not interested in the documentary sighting and securing of individual artefacts, concrete topographical details or a purely personal experience. What is found is only an occasion to see.”

The so-called papercuts, which have been created as an ongoing project since the beginning of 2018, are for me a new series of works that complements the overall work. These superimposed pictorial spaces created in the material reflect the relation of image to reality, of reality to possibility and of viewer to image in perception. The small works, which are created as collages from empty cardboard boxes, preferably from the 1970s, are freed of all information and reduced to the pure colour surface and a form resulting from it. The spatial cardboard becomes a flat structure composed of recurring modules. From here I develop the project cut edge, for which these works are transformed into large relief-like wall works, which can also be assembled in a modular fashion and thus can be and remain changeable. Here I come back to the beginning of my explanation: "What if... “.
