Moritz Moll (b. 1991) completed his studies in painting in 2021 as a master student under Prof. Anke Doberauer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (AdBK). In his paintings, Moritz Moll explores the interstices of everyday life—intimate moments of being unobserved, of drifting off, and of concentration. Through sophisticated color compositions and delicate line work, he transforms the trivial into immediate everyday fetishes that are entirely imbued with the polarity of tangible and intangible space, as well as two- and three-dimensionality. By using oil, acrylic, and spray paints on canvas, Moll creates a unique painterly system in which surface and line interlock to form enduring compositions that counter the transience of what is depicted. A collection of garments and props—some of which hold great emotional value—serves as the source material, through which Moll stages the subjects—often people close to him. In his paintings, Moll skillfully navigates the traditional canon of portraitists while simultaneously revealing a fresh, confident perspective on a genre once thought to have been fully explored.

In recent years, flowers have become a recurring subject for the German artist. For him, painting a bouquet is akin to a musician practising scales: a chance to experiment freely with colour, texture and paint. As Moll explains: “In my floral paintings, I mainly enjoy composing colours and textures on the canvas, like a finger exercise. Bouquets are the perfect subject for this.” Painted in oil, acrylic and spray paint, the densely packed arrangement is unmistakably floral, but Moll varies the way individual blooms are described across the canvas. Some are clearly delineated, others are simplified into flatter areas of colour, while stems and smaller flowers become increasingly graphic. The bouquet gives him a recognisable structure within which different ways of making an image can coexist. Matisse is an important reference, particularly in Moll’s understanding of colour as something that need not be subservient to naturalistic description. Moll’s use of spray paint alongside more traditional techniques takes those ideas into his own practice, allowing him to move continually between the flower as a recognisable subject and the marks from which it is made.
